UCLA Forces Monday Elimination Game with 4-2 Win over Maryland

June 01, 2015 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Bruins battled to win their second game of the day, 4-2, over the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The victory keeps the Bruins alive and forces a final game seven match-up tomorrow between the same two schools with a spot in the Super Regionals on the line.

The Bruins totaled four runs on 13 hits, reaching the double-digit hit mark for the second time today and 32nd time this season. Once again, it was Kevin Kramer (2-for-5, R, RBI) and Ty Moore (3-for-4, 2B, 2 R) that led the way for the UCLA offense. Darrell Miller Jr. (3-for-4, R) also chipped in three hits in the effort.

The UCLA pitching staff turned in another solid outing, holding the Terps to just six hits. Tucker Forbes (1-0) threw 1.2 perfect innings of relief, adding one strikeout, to get the victory. Maryland starter Ryan Selmer (3-1) allowed three runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings to garner the loss. Senior closer David Berg (13) earned the six-out save, allowing just one hit, while striking out three.

Similar to yesterday's game with Maryland, UCLA (45-15) struck in the opening frame to take the early lead. Kramer led off with a single and was moved to second by a sacrifice-bunt. Then, Moore reached on an infield single to set up a first and third with one out for Luke Persico. The Bruin first baseman proceeded to single through the left side to bring in the first run of the night for the Bruins.

UCLA backed that up with another run in the second to extend the lead to two. Another lead-off single, this time from Miller Jr., got things moving for the Bruins. A sacrifice-bunt and a ground-out followed to move Miller Jr. to third. Then, with two down, Kramer delivered the RBI-single to put UCLA up, 2-0.

Maryland (41-22) got back within a run in the top of the third with one swing of the bat. LaMonte Wade began the inning by launching a home run deep to right field to score the opening tally for the Terps.

However, the Bruins didn't let Maryland revel in the potential comeback, scoring in the bottom half to push the advantage back to a pair. A lead-off single produced a run for the third consecutive inning for UCLA. Moore began with a single and eventually came home on a two-out RBI single from Kort Peterson to make the score 3-1 after three.

Following a scoreless fourth, the Terps pulled back within one again in the top of the fifth. With runners on the corners and one out, Kevin Smith executed a 'squeeze' bunt to get Tim Lewis in from third to make it a 3-2 game.

Then, in the bottom of the seventh, it was Moore creating havoc again to give the Bruins their final insurance run. With two outs, Moore attempted to steal third. The throw from Maryland catcher Kevin Martir got away and the UCLA left fielder came scampering home to reach the final count of 4-2.

UCLA and Maryland will play for a third and final time this weekend tomorrow at 8:00pm PT to decide who advances to the Super Regionals. The game can be seen live on ESPNU and fans can also tune into live audio at uclabruins.com.

Notes: In the two games combined today, the Bruins hit .366, led by Darrell Miller Jr. (5-for-7, 2B, 3 R) and Ty Moore (4-for-7, 2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI). UCLA is now 19-2 when scoring in the first inning. The Bruins are 34-0 when leading after six innings, 35-0 when leading after seven and 37-0 when leading after eight. This will mark the first time since the NCAA adopted the current playoff format in 1999 that UCLA has hosted a game seven elimination game. The Bruins are now 14-3 in regional games hosted at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
