July 17, 2017 | Football

CHICAGO – Senior Kenny Young has been named to the watch list for the Butkus Award in an announcement made by the award's selection panel on Monday.

Young started all 12 games last season and finished second on the team with 90 tackles. He ranked fifth in the conference in total tackles per game average (7.5) and was named second-team All-Pac-12 Conference. He tied for 11th in the Pac-12 in sacks per game (0.42) and was second on the Bruin team with 8.5 tackles for loss. Young's total of three fumble recoveries ranked tied for eighth in the country. He recorded a season-best of 12 stops versus Arizona.

The Butkus Award has honored the nation's best linebacker for the past 32 years and is named for Dick Butkus, whom NFL Films considers the best defensive player in the football history. Bruin Eric Kendricks, now with the Minnesota Vikings, became UCLA's first winner of the award following the 2014 season.

A 51-person selection panel which includes coaches, talent evaluators and journalists will name the semifinalists for the award on October 30, finalists on November 20 and the winners on or before December 5.
