UCLA Soccer Signs Standout Recruiting Class

May 03, 2017 | Women's Soccer

UCLA Women's Soccer has assembled another star-studded recruiting class for the 2017 season, highlighted by No. 1 recruit and U.S. Women's National Team member Ashley Sanchez and Canadian Women's National Team member Kennedy Faulknor. Also signing with UCLA are Youth National Team players Olivia Athens, Lauren Brzykcy, Karina Rodriguez, Delanie Sheehan and Viviana Villacorta and local standouts Issy Bellinghausen, Dani Satterwhite and Hannah Sharts.

The UCLA freshman class is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer.

"UCLA has had some very special, talented classes through the years, and when all is said and done, this class may be one of the best," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "Obviously this is a class of quantity with 10 players, but what stands out even more is the quality of this group of young women. There are two players with full national team experience, which is very rare, then you add in all the youth national team camps and competitions to get the full scope of the potential of this class. We are extremely excited to get them to Westwood this summer to begin preparation for another highly competitive fall schedule."

Olivia Athens
Midfielder Atherton, Calif. (Menlo-Atherton HS) PSV Union
Athens
  • Member of U.S. Under-18 National Team, attending seven camps at the Under-18 level
  • Participated in the Six Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain with the U-18s in March 2016
  • Played first two years at Sacred Heart Prep and earned first-team all-league honors in 2013-14 and WBAL Offensive Player of the Year acclaim in 2014-15
  • Tallied 33 goals and 30 assists in two years
  • Club team won 2014 Surf Cup

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Olivia is a crafty player who wants to play the game in an intelligent way. She loves to play the perfectly-weighted pass and is very competitive. Olivia's style resonates with the way we play, and we know she will make those around her better. We are excited to get the PSV Union (Northern California) connection of Olivia and Jacey Pederson back together in Westwood."

Issy Bellinghausen
Forward/Midfielder Laguna Niguel, Calif. (San Juan Hills HS) So Cal Blues
Bellinghausen
  • Cal South Pro Player Plus
  • First-team All-Sea View League in 2015-16
  • Team captain at San Juan Hills HS in 2016-17
  • Won Scholar-Athlete Award all four years

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Issy loves to take on an opponent 1 v 1 and is very slippery on the ball. Her personality matches her game, as she is very passionate and full of joy. Issy is just as fast on the ball as she is off the ball, which is a nightmare for defenders. She will provide depth to our attacking front line and a fun personality to our team."

Lauren Brzykcy
Goalkeeper San Clemente, Calif. (San Clemente HS) West Coast FC/So Cal Blues
Brzykcy
  • Member of U.S. Under-17 National Team
  • 2016 NSCAA High School All-American and All-Region
  • Finalist for the Gatorade Player of the Year in 2016
  • Earned all-state honors in 2016
  • Named to Best XI at the 2015 ECNL National Championships
  • Played in ECLN National Championships three times, winning one championship

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Lauren is a very brave goalkeeper who seeks challenges. We saw Lauren play with her club team, but it was really her performance at our ID camp that showed everyone she could be a goalkeeper at UCLA. She is a proven shot-stopper and is comfortable with her feet while building the game from the back. Lauren has continued to improve her game these last few years, which makes us even more excited to get her on campus to work with Jenny."

Kennedy Faulknor
Defender Markham, Ontario, Canada (Bill Crothers Secondary School) Unionville-Milliken SC

Faulknor
  • Member of the Canadian National Team and Under-20 National Team
  • Earned her first cap with the Canadian Women's National Team Dec. 9, 2015 and has four overall caps
  • At 16 years old, she was the youngest center back ever to play for Canada
  • 2015 U17 Canadian Player of the Year
  • Led Canada to the Under-15 CONCACAF Championship in 2014 and was named to the Best XI
  • Played in 2016 CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championship

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Kennedy will be a fantastic fit in Westwood. She has several caps with the Canadian full team and is a premiere left-footed defender. We saw Kennedy years ago at the Disney Showcase, and she stood out as one of the best players in that tournament. She has power, pace, and loves to have the ball at her feet. She is truly a modern-day center back who also can play on the flank. We have high expectations for Kennedy, as she does for herself."

Karina Rodriguez
Defender Torrance, Calif. (Torrance HS) So Cal Blues

Rodriguez
  • Member of U.S. Under-17 World Cup Team
  • Called up to the U.S. Under-19 National Team camp in April 2017
  • Two-time NSCAA Youth All-American
  • 2016 Youth Player of the Year nominee
  • Older sister Anika earned All-Pac-12 honors in her redshirt freshman year at UCLA in 2016
  • Enrolled at UCLA in Spring 2017

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Karina was family from day one. She is a player that is such a calming influence in the back. In her UCLA spring debut vs. the Seattle Reign, with only one day of training, she was able to step in as a starter and performed very well against professional players. Her experience with U.S. Youth teams shines through, as she already approaches her craft like a professional."

Ashley Sanchez
Forward/Midfielder Monrovia, Calif. (Monrovia HS) So Cal Blues

Sanchez
  • Trained with the U.S. Women's National Team in April 2016
  • Starter on the 2016 U.S. Under-20 World Cup Team and captain of the 2016 Under-17 World Cup Team
  • First U.S. player in history to play in two Women's World Cups in the same year
  • 2016 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year
  • 2016 NSCAA Youth Girls All-American Player of the Year
  • Won the Golden Ball and named to the Best XI at the 2016 CONCACAF Under-17 Women's Championships

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "We knew very early on that Ashley was special. She is clearly the top player in the nation for 2017. Ashley loves the game and works very hard to improve all aspects. Her work ethic and mad skills make for an incredible combination. Ashley embraces the idea that as an elite athlete the little things make the big things happen."

Dani Satterwhite
Defender San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (San Juan Hills HS) So Cal Blues

Satterwhite
  • Cal South ODP player
  • Member of SoCal Blues squad that won the national championship
  • Four-year varsity starter at San Juan Hills HS who played every position but goalkeeper
  • Led her San Juan Hills team in minutes played (1,502) as a senior

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Dani is an athletic defender who continues to grow in the game. She was on a talented club team and was noticed because she did her job every game. One of the attributes of players we mention quite often at UCLA is consistency. Day in and day out, Dani will perform her job for the betterment of the team at every training session and match."

Hannah Sharts
Defender/Midfielder Newbury Park, Calif. (Westlake HS) Slammers/Real SoCal

Sharts
  • Member of Cal South ODP team that won the National Championship
  • ODP All-Star team in 2015
  • Top scorer at the 2015 ODP Regional Tournament
  • Marmonte League MVP in 2016 and 2017 and Defensive MVP in 2015
  • All-American Watch List in 2016-17 and three-time All-CIF selection
  • Mother Michele played soccer at UCLA and helped the team's movement to Division I status

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Hannah's skill-set was easy to translate to the college game. She is six-feet tall and is a weapon on set pieces both from heading the ball and from having a very long throw. Along with her physical stature came this ability to strike an accurate ball over great distances. When you're talking about breaking a press or finding the switch against a block defense, it is rare to have someone who can ping a ball 60 yards on a dime. We look forward to Hannah's addition and growth in our system."

Delanie Sheehan
Midfielder/Forward Brentwood, Calif. (Liberty HS) West Coast SC

Sheehan
  • Member of U.S. Under-19 and Under-18 National Teams
  • All-American Watch List
  • BVAL League MVP in 2015 and 2016 and a three-time NCS first-team honoree
  • Finalist for Gatorade State Player of the Year
  • Best of NEPS All-Tournament team two years
  • Member of National Championship club squad West Coast SC

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Delanie is a smooth attacker who can play in the midfield or up top. She brings the ability to dribble through the middle with a gliding stride and has tremendous vision to pick out other players through seams in the defense. Her potential is just beginning to show, and she recently earned a call-up to the Under-18 National Team. Delanie hasn't received the same exposure as some of the others, but she is every bit as talented."

Viviana Villacorta
Midfielder Lawndale, Calif. (Mira Costa HS) Beach FC/Santa Clarita Blue Heat

Villacorta
  • Member of U.S. Under-20 National Team
  • Previously played with the U.S. Under-18 and Under-19 National Teams
  • Member of 2016 National Champion Santa Clarita Blue Heat
  • Won USYS National Championships in 2015 and 2016 with Cal South ODP teams
  • Daily Breeze All-Area selection

UCLA Head Coach Amanda Cromwell: "Viviana comes from a soccer family, and she loves the game. She is an emerging player in the U.S. Under-20 National Team and adds new pieces to her game as she gains more exposure. Viviana is fantastic on the ball because she can use a variety of surfaces to make the game. But more than her technical ability, it is her mind and vision that separate her from her peers. She seems to be two or three steps ahead of the action, a quality that is essential for elite players."
