Seventeen Bruins Begin 2023 NWSL Season on Opening Day Rosters

A total of 17 former UCLA women's soccer players begin a new season in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) this weekend, with all 12 teams in action March 25 and 26.
Among the Bruin players in the league are 2022 NCAA champions Madelyn Desiano and Lauren Brzykcy, 2021 graduates and OL Reign teammates Olivia Athens and Marley Canales and six members of UCLA's 2013 NCAA Championship team – Sam Mewis, Caprice Dydasco, Katelyn Rowland, Taylor Smith, Megan Montefusco and Abby Dahlkemper.
The Bruins are represented on nine teams, including three each on NJ/NY Gotham FC (Smith, Delanie Sheehan and McCall Zerboni) and OL Reign (Athens, Canales and Lauren Barnes). UCLA has two players each on Kansas City (Mewis and Hailie Mace), Houston (Desiano and Dydasco) Orlando (Viviana Villacorta and Montefusco), and San Diego (Dahlkemper and Brzykcy). Sydney Leroux is the lone Bruin on Angel City FC, Rowland plays for North Carolina, and Ashley Sanchez plays for Washington.
