Women's Tennis Tops Arizona State for Sixth Straight Win

March 12, 2022 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES – The 14th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive Pac-12 match and sixth straight overall, defeating No. 30 Arizona State by a 4-1 score Saturday at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Bruins (8-3, 4-1 Pac-12) needed a comeback to secure the day's first point before building a 3-0 advantage in singles play. Abbey Forbes clinched the overall win. Elysia Bolton and Vanessa Ong, who teamed for the come-from-behind win in doubles play, also won individually. Patricija Spaka was triumphant for the Sun Devils (8-5, 1-3).

In a matchup of nationally-ranked combinations on the top court, No. 56 Spaka and Domenika Turkovic seized six of seven games against No. 23 Forbes and Ava Catanzarite to give ASU the advantage. UCLA would bounce back on Court 3, though, as Kimmi Hance and Sasha Vagramov kept their dual-match record pristine with a 6-2 result versus Natasha Hill and Cali Jankowski. Hance and Vagramov are now 6-0 in dual-match doubles action.

Bolton and Ong trailed Sedona Gallagher and Giulia Morlet by a 1-4 margin. The tide shifted in the direction of the Bruins, though, aided in large part by a break of serve at 2-4. That snowballed into five games won in a row by Bolton and Ong for a 6-4 decision and their second victory in as many days.

With momentum on its side, UCLA took five of six singles first sets. Ong quickly completed a 4-0 homestand, as she handed Hill a 6-1, 6-0 loss on Court 6 to officially get singles play underway.

Next off was No. 69 Bolton, who, like Ong, was 4-0 against Arizona and Arizona State. Bolton dispatched of Turkovic on Court 2, 6-1, 6-1, making it 3-0 in favor of the Bruins. Bolton improved to 6-1 in dual-match singles competitions.

Spaka chipped away at the UCLA lead with her 6-4, 6-2 win versus Catanzarite on Court 5, but it proved too little, too late. No. 42 Forbes sealed the Bruins' win on the top court, where she moved her dual-match singles record to 7-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 performance against Morlet.

UCLA will be out of action until Monday, March 21, when it begins a four-match Northern California road trip with an opening stop at the University of San Francisco. First serve from the Olympic Club is set for 11 a.m. PT.
